CEDAW interim shadow report published

NIWEP submitted an interim shadow report to the CEDAW Committee, focused on key recommendations in the Concluding Observations on gender equality, the impact of Brexit and formal mechanisms for women's engagement in policy making. The report highlights lack of progress and a concern regarding the long standing low priority given to gender equality in policy making in Northern Ireland, and calls for the CEDAW Committee to seek clarification on the lack of progress.

NIWEP also helped coordinate a four nations report, compiled with Engender in Scotland, Women's Equality Network Wales and Women's Resource Centre based in London. This report similarly reflects a lack of focus on women and gender equality in policy making since 2019 across several of the four nations and calls for action to ensure equitable rights for women across the UK.

The CEDAW Committee will review the UK government's interim report at its session in October. The shadow interim reports are designed to inform this review, and to begin preparation for the next examination of the UK under CEDAW, due in 2023.
